We have a licensed marriage and family therapist (MFT), as well as an associate MFT, on our team. Both of us are trained in EMDR therapy and specialize in helping clients within certain areas.

NAOMI COOPER MARTIN, LMFT

I help adolescents and adults of all ages process and work through the difficulties of life. Whether you’ve experienced trauma, are processing grief, or want support to improve your overall well-being, I’m here for you. I gently hold space for my clients, while also being honest and direct with them. In addition to narrative (talk) therapy, I’m professionally trained in using EMDR and neurofeedback therapies.

I help children, adolescents, adults, families, and couples navigate challenging transitions in life so they can thrive. Types of Therapy You’ll Get

There are many different modalities when it comes to mental and emotional health. Therapists on our team specialize in the following evidence-based therapies, which have proven to help clients process and heal from trauma, emotional disturbances, depression-anxiety disorders, behavior disorders, and more.

NARRATIVE (OR ‘TALK’) THERAPY

At Trauma & Relationship Counseling, the modality we use for “talk” therapy is called Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, or CBT. This form of talk therapy helps us problem-solve – while also revealing the relationship between beliefs, thoughts, and feelings, and the behaviors that follow. It helps people see how their actions reveal their internal thoughts and perspectives, which often come from their family of origin and life situations. Once we realize the thoughts and feelings that are driving our behaviors (especially the behaviors we want to change), then we are better able to change the unhelpful thoughts and behaviors.According to the Beck Institute (founder of CBT therapy), “CBT is based on the theory that the way individuals perceive a situation is more closely connected to their reaction than the situation itself. Individuals’ perceptions are often distorted and unhelpful, particularly when they are distressed. Cognitive Behavior Therapy helps people identify their distressing thoughts and evaluate how realistic the thoughts are. Then they learn to change their distorted thinking. When they think more realistically, they feel better. The emphasis is also consistently on solving problems and initiating behavioral changes.”

NEUROFEEDBACK

Neurofeedback is a type of therapy where we help the brain work more effectively. It has proven to be incredibly helpful for many people and situations, but in particular for emotional regulation, behavior issues, depression, PTSD, and migraines. It can sound a bit intimidating at first to some, so we like to explain what you can expect from a neurofeedback session. Gentle sensors are placed on your head, which are attached to a monitor for tracking brain activity. During a typical neurofeedback session, you are either watching a show or playing a game while Naomi (our trained neurofeedback therapist) asks you questions. She tracks activity on the monitor and through positive and negative feedback, she is able to help you re-train your brain. It’s pretty incredible what your brain and body are capable of! According to the EEG website, “[Neurofeedback] is direct training of brain function, by which the brain learns to function more efficiently. We observe the brain in action from moment to moment. We show that information back to the person. And we reward the brain for changing its own activity to more appropriate patterns. This is a gradual learning process. It applies to any aspect of brain function that we can measure. Neurofeedback is also called EEG Biofeedback because it is based on electrical brain activity, the electroencephalogram, or EEG. Neurofeedback is training in self-regulation. It is simply biofeedback applied to the brain directly. Self-regulation is a necessary part of good brain function. Self-regulation training allows the system (the central nervous system) to function better. Neurofeedback addresses problems of brain dysregulation. These happen to be numerous. They include the anxiety-depression spectrum, attention deficits, behavior disorders, various sleep disorders, headaches and migraines, PMS, and emotional disturbances.” Naomi is our trained neurofeedback specialist.

EMDR

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It is a theory that uses bilateral stimulation (through eye movements or tapping) to activate both sides of the body, which in turn activates both sides of the brain. It allows memories that are stuck with the original sights, sounds, smells, and body sensations to be processed. It can bring freedom from disturbing memories that are causing disruptions in life, as well as from the symptoms that are caused by the disturbing memories. All of our therapists are trained EMDR clinicians and offer this modality to help clients activate their mind’s natural healing processes.The EMDR Institute’s website explains this form of therapy well: “EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a psychotherapy that enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of disturbing life experiences. Repeated studies show that by using EMDR people can experience the benefits of psychotherapy that once took years to make a difference. EMDR therapy shows that the mind can in fact heal from psychological trauma much as the body recovers from physical trauma. When you cut your hand, your body works to close the wound. If a foreign object or repeated injury irritates the wound, it festers and causes pain. Once the block is removed, healing resumes. EMDR therapy demonstrates that a similar sequence of events occurs with mental processes. The brain’s information processing system naturally moves toward mental health. If the system is blocked or imbalanced by the impact of a disturbing event, the emotional wound festers and can cause intense suffering. Once the block is removed, healing resumes.”

FAQs

  • All sessions are 55-60 minutes and are $180 per session. We provide a superbill that you can submit to insurance for reimbursement.

  • Sessions are usually either every week or bi-weekly depending on what you need and want.

  • We accept United Healthcare and Tricare.

  • The length of time of each person’s healing journey is unique to the circumstances that bring them into therapy, their level of commitment to the process, and their goals. Generally speaking, it can take as few as 10 sessions or as long as 6-12 months or more.

  • There is parking in front of and behind the building. The front lobby has stairs and an elevator and the back lobby has stairs.
